ComPsych® Corporation, the world’s largest provider of mental health and absence management services, today released new data that shows mental health related leaves continue to skyrocket among U.S. workers. A sample analysis of ComPsych’s absence book of business, which covers more than six million people, found that in the first quarter of 2024, more than one in ten (11%) of all leaves of absence were due to mental health. This represents a 22% increase in mental health leaves versus those taken in the first quarter of 2023. This trend is being driven by female workers, who accounted for 69% of all mental health leaves of absence in 2023, and 71% of all mental health leaves in the first quarter of 2024.

A ComPsych analysis of several thousand cases from its 2023 UK book of business found that nearly a third (31%) of people who reached out for mental health assistance in the UK did so to get help with anxiety. This benchmark is seven percentage points higher than that seen in America, where anxiety was also the top presenting issue in 24% of U.S. cases.

A sampling of more than 80,000 depression cases from its U.S. 2022 and 2023 book of business found nearly four in ten (38%) of depression cases were found in those aged 20-29, while 60% of cases were found in women across all age groups.

As employers continue efforts to get back to a new normal, the highly contagious Delta variant and return to mask recommendation by the CDC are upending return to the office plans and leading many to contemplate mandates. According to a poll by ComPsych®, the world’s largest provider of behavioral, mental health and wellbeing services, 33% of employers are either mandating or considering mandating vaccinations of their employees and 72% are mandating masks or considering reinstating use in the office.
