Health Psychologist Robert Lutz Explores the Forces, Choices, and Fundamental Role of Luck That Shape a Life Well-Lived

San Francisco, CA [23/08/2025]. In “Start to Finish: A Life Well-Lived," Dr. Robert Lutz delivers fully on the promise of the book's title and the premise. Drawing on his decades of experience as a psychologist, educator and Behavioral Medicine specialist, he reveals how our shared needs honed over millennia living in cohesive groups as hunter-gatherers can be met in today’s modern world.

Lutz invites readers to explore the choices and forces that shape our lives with compassion and honesty. He doesn’t shy away from the realities of life and explains how factors outside our control, including the family and societal circumstances we’re born into, play a fundamental role in how life unfolds.

“Some children get all the opportunities, help and support they need to succeed in school and in life. Others with similar hopes and needs aren’t so lucky”.

He notes that the pursuit of a good, full and healthy life doesn’t rest on a level playing field, making our choices and efforts all the more important. With kindness and honesty, he describes how people gravitate to where their abilities, interests, and opportunities lie, “choosing the best available option” and creating a path forward to a good life for everyone as long as opportunity exists and is paired with effort. His practical and compassionate approach is both informative and motivational. Lutz provides concrete steps we can take to develop a more positive outlook, effective communication styles, deeper relationships, and a healthier lifestyle.

Lutz closes his book with a review of the dramatic variability in how people age. He provides ten concrete steps to stay healthy and fulfilled through old age, and explores the challenges in end-of-life care.

Why This Book Is Making Waves?

Dr. Lutz doesn’t shy away from the sometimes-grim realities of end-of-life care and choices, and offers his views on how advanced medical directives should be expanded.
