San Francisco-based Parkinson Benson Potter filed a lawsuit on Monday, January 13, 2025, against Southern California Edison Company and Edison International (“Edison”) for their role in causing the devastating Eaton Fire in Southern California. The law firm represents more than 200 victims of the fire that has burned, so far, more than 14,000 acres, and destroyed about 7,000 structures. The fire is one of the largest wildfires in Los Angeles County history.
According to the complaint filed in Los Angeles County, California, the Eaton Fire started on January 7, 2025, when overhead power lines ignited trees, brush, and ground vegetation on the east side of Eaton Canyon. Although the National Weather Service Los Angeles issued a Fire Weather Watch effective January 7, 2025, through January 10, 2025, Edison decided to keep many parts of its distribution circuit in and near Eaton Canyon energized. The lawsuit alleges that Edison’s negligence led to the massive fire that could have otherwise been avoided.
Brett Parkinson, who signed the complaint on behalf of Parkinson Benson Potter, stated: “Unfortunately, this appears to be another example of Edison starting a massive fire in California that could have been avoided if the company had taken proper preventive measures and acted appropriately.” Mr. Parkinson seeks justice for those affected by the Eaton Fire, saying: “I am honored to represent so many good people of Los Angeles County. I understand the suffering they are going through and want to get them the compensation they deserve for their devastating losses.”
Mr. Parkinson has previously represented victims of wildfires throughout the state of California for nearly 15 years. Parkinson hopes the lawsuit will help the community start the rebuilding process: “This event has been painful for so many. But there is a desire in the community to rebuild and come back stronger than ever. My goal is to help everyone have that opportunity.”
Parkinson Benson Potter has the local knowledge, extensive wildfire litigation experience, and the resources to bring justice to those devastated by this tragic situation.
