Ammonium chloride, also known as ammonium chloride, also known as electric salt and brine, is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula NH4Cl. It refers to the ammonium salt of hydrochloric acid, which is mostly a by-product of the alkali industry. It contains 24% to 26% nitrogen, colorless cubic crystals or white crystalline powder, and has two dosage forms: powder and granular. Granular ammonium chloride is not easy to absorb moisture and is easy to store. Relative density 1.5274. Refractive index 1.642. Low toxicity, median lethal dose (rat, oral) 1650mg/kg. Irritating. Sublimates when heated to 350℃, boiling point 520℃. It tastes salty, cool and slightly bitter, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, soluble in liquid ammonia, insoluble in acetone and ether. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and the acidity increases when heated.
Industrial Uses of Ammonium Chloride
1. In mineral processing, in order to solve the problem of excessive arsenic in lead and zinc concentrates, ammonium chloride is added during the lead and zinc roughing and concentrating operations, which can be used as an inhibitor of arsenic minerals.
2. It cleans the surface of the workpiece by reacting with the metal oxides on the surface to form volatile metal chlorides, and is used to prepare flux for tin-plating and galvanizing metals.
3. Ammonium chloride is acidic when hydrolyzed. It is used as a flux for welding steel to remove rust at the weld. The main function of the flux is to remove the metal oxides generated on the metal surface at the weld to ensure a firm weld.
4. The dry cell used in daily life is a zinc-manganese battery, also called a carbon-zinc battery. The space between the carbon bag and the zinc cylinder is filled with a paste consisting of ammonium chloride, an aqueous solution of zinc chloride, and starch, which is called an electric paste. The main component of the electric paste is ammonium chloride, which increases the concentration of zinc ions in the solution, alleviates the corrosion of ammonium chloride on the zinc cylinder, and prolongs the battery life.
5. It is widely used in the electroplating industry, especially in cyanide-free electroplating, where ammonium chloride is used more.
Therefore, when applying ammonium chloride, special attention should be paid to the following matters:
① It is best not to apply ammonium chloride or use as little as possible in arid and rainless areas and saline-alkali soils.
② It is forbidden to apply ammonium chloride to "chlorine-sensitive crops", including tobacco, grapes, apples, pears, peaches, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, citrus, tea, etc.
③ Ammonium chloride is more suitable for application on crops such as rice, flax, and hemp.
④ Ammonium chloride is suitable for base fertilizer and topdressing, not for seed fertilizer, and ammonium chloride cannot be used as seed fertilizer, otherwise it will affect seed germination.
